Karlskaserne, Military barracks in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
Karlskaserne is a barracks complex in Freiburg im Breisgau, though today only the west wing remains standing as the main visible structure. The surviving section features the original window arrangement and brick construction, positioned at the eastern edge of Europaplatz near Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse.
Built in 1773 according to designs by architect Leonhard Wippert, the structure was named after Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria. Following extensive destruction during air raids in 1944, the west wing was reconstructed during the 1950s.
Eighteen bronze plaques honoring fallen soldiers of the 5th Badisches Infanterieregiment Nr. 113 were installed at the barracks entrance in 1874.
The surviving west wing now houses the municipal office for children, youth, and family services, and you can view it from the outside. Its location in the city center makes it easy to reach on foot or by public transit.
The west wing visible today is largely a careful reconstruction from the 1950s, representing an unusual example of how a damaged military structure was thoughtfully restored. Its conversion to a family services office shows how barracks buildings were quietly adapted to serve civilian purposes.
