Schlossbergbahn, Funicular railway in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
The Schlossbergbahn is a funicular railway in Freiburg im Breisgau that carries passengers from the city center up to the Schlossberg hill. The two cabins run on a single track with a passing loop midway, linking a lower city station directly to the hilltop.
A cable car first opened at this location in 1968 and ran for nearly four decades before closing in 2006. It was replaced two years later by the current system, which introduced updated technology and larger cabins.
The funicular connects the city to a popular destination where locals and visitors seek a break from daily routines. From above, many look down at the rooftops and streets as part of experiencing the place.
The lower station is within walking distance of the city center and the railway is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. On sunny days or weekends the cabins fill up fast, so it is worth arriving a few minutes early.
The current railway uses a counterweight system in which one cabin pulls the other up as it descends, meaning the motor only needs to compensate for the difference in load. This makes the ride noticeably smooth even on the steep 22 percent grade.
