Jewish courtyard, Medieval Jewish heritage site in Speyer, Germany.
The Jewish Courtyard contains remains of a synagogue, women's prayer room, and ritual bath constructed with sandstone and brick architectural elements.
Bishop Rüdiger Huzmann provided protection to Jewish refugees from Mainz in 1084, leading to the establishment of the Jewish community in Speyer.
The site forms part of the SchUM cities, along with Worms and Mainz, which established foundations for Ashkenazi Jewish traditions in Northern Europe.
The Jewish Courtyard archaeological remains are located near Speyer Cathedral, with the SchPIRA Museum displaying artifacts from medieval Jewish life.
The ritual bath, constructed in 1126, represents the earliest documented Mikvah in Europe and features intricate Romanesque stone carvings.
