U-9, Type 205 submarine in Speyer, Germany
U-9 is a Type 205 class military submarine on display at the Technik Museum Speyer, in the city of Speyer in southwestern Germany. The boat is exhibited on land and can be visited both outside and inside, with its original fittings and narrow passageways still in place.
U-9 was built at the Howaldtswerke shipyard in Kiel in the early 1960s and entered service with the West German Navy in 1967. After nearly three decades of active service, the boat was decommissioned and eventually transferred to Speyer as a museum ship.
The name U-9 echoes earlier German submarines from the two world wars, which often sparks recognition among visitors with an interest in naval history. Inside, the sleeping quarters, control panels, and torpedo tubes give a direct sense of how the crew lived and worked day to day.
Access to the interior is through narrow hatches, so comfortable clothing and flat shoes make the visit easier. Anyone sensitive to confined spaces should be prepared, as the passageways are very low and tight throughout the boat.
The Type 205 class was built without magnetic steel, because magnetic hulls could trigger sensitive mines during Cold War patrols. The hull of U-9 is made of non-magnetic material, which made it technically unusual for its time.
