Mehlinger Heide

Mehlinger Heide is a protected natural area with extensive heathland and varied plant life in southern Germany. The terrain features open landscape sections and different vegetation types spread across several hundred hectares.

The land was originally forested and became a military training ground in the early 1900s. After military use ended in the 1990s, it was restored as a nature reserve.

The name comes from the heathland vegetation that covers the landscape today. Visitors notice how local conservation groups actively manage this ecosystem to keep it healthy.

The area has marked paths and is best explored on foot. Visitors should wear suitable footwear and allow time to walk through the open sections.

The site contains one of the largest heathland formations in the region with an observation point at an elevated location. This heath ecosystem was recovered through years of conservation work after military use.
