Lützow-Kaserne, Military barracks in Handorf district, Münster, Germany
Lützow-Kaserne is an active military base in the Handorf district of Münster, made up of several buildings spread across a large site. It includes housing, administrative offices, and working areas used by different military units stationed there.
The site served as an airfield in the 1930s and was used as a temporary shelter for displaced people after World War II. In 1956 it was converted into a Bundeswehr base, making use of the land that was already in place.
The barracks takes its name from Ludwig Adolf Wilhelm von Lützow, a Prussian general known for leading a volunteer corps during the Napoleonic Wars. His name still appears across the region, on streets and other sites that carry on this memory.
The base is an active military facility and is not open to the general public without prior authorization. Visits are usually limited to approved groups or specific events, so it is worth checking in advance before planning a trip.
The name Lützow is familiar to many Germans through a poem written by Theodor Körner in 1813 for the Lützow Free Corps, which later became a well-known song. This link between a popular poem and an active military base gives the name a layer that most visitors would not expect.
