Phänomenta e.V., Science center on Flensburg Fjord, Germany
Phänomenta is a science center in Flensburg with about 170 interactive stations for experimenting. Visitors can explore and understand physical phenomena by engaging directly with the displays.
The center was founded in 1985 by Professor Lutz Fiesser and was Germany's first purely interactive science facility. It began at the Pedagogical University in Flensburg and set a new standard for science education at that time.
The center emphasizes science and mathematics through hands-on exploration rather than lectures or textbooks. Visitors learn by trying things themselves, which makes education more personal and direct.
The stations are designed to be self-explanatory, allowing visitors to explore independently. Visiting outside of school group hours helps you use the equipment without long waits.
The stations deliberately avoid detailed explanations and instead show only brief action prompts. This approach forces visitors to discover through trial and error rather than simply reading ready-made answers.
