Castrum Grinario

Castrum Grinario is a Roman-era fortress near the Neckar River with stone walls and foundations remaining. The masonry remnants show the layout and structure of the original military installation.

The fortress developed as part of the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes defense line marking the Roman northern frontier in Germania Superior. It belonged to a network of forts that protected the province from outsiders.

The site reveals traces of daily life for soldiers stationed here nearly 2000 years ago. Found objects tell stories of their routines and how they spent their time.

The archaeological site is open year-round with information panels explaining the different sections. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven.

The site maintained its original rectangular shape following standardized Roman building methods with precisely measured walls. This pattern was spread across the empire and helped soldiers quickly orient themselves in any new fort.
