The Wernau Quarry Ponds comprise several water bodies in the Neckar valley at approximately 255 meters elevation. The protected area covers roughly 32 hectares of varying depths with different vegetation.
These waters formed in the 20th century when gravel extraction left deep pits across the landscape. Over time the abandoned pits filled with water and transformed into natural habitats.
The ponds attract bird watchers who observe over 200 species throughout the year. These water bodies serve as stopover points for migratory birds and draw nature enthusiasts regularly.
The area offers marked paths for exploration, though visitors should keep distance from protected zones. The terrain is best visited during daylight hours and requires proper footwear for wet areas.
A Daimler testing facility operated inside the protected area until 2018. The relocation of vehicle testing to another site allowed more comprehensive habitat restoration.
