Sender Mainz-Kastel, Radio and television transmitter in Wiesbaden, Germany
Sender Mainz-Kastel is a broadcasting transmission mast in Wiesbaden that stands 170 meters tall and serves to distribute radio signals. The installation uses steel lattice construction and broadcasts digital audio services across several channels for different radio stations.
The current steel lattice structure replaced the previous installation from 1984, which stood 156 meters tall, when it was rebuilt in 2014. This modernization improved the transmission capabilities for the region.
The transmitter broadcasts radio programs that people in the region listen to daily, including well-known stations like SWR1 and SWR3. It plays a role in providing media options for the local population.
The transmission site is visible from public areas since the tall structure is recognizable from many points in the city. Visitors can view it from various locations even though direct access to the facility is typically not available.
Although the transmitter is located in Hesse, it was originally operated by SWF to serve Mainz rather than by HR, which is typical for the state. This unusual arrangement shows how radio signals ignore political boundaries and reflects historical broadcasting patterns.
