Leichlinger Sandberge

Leichlinger Sandberge, Hill group and cultural heritage monument in Leichlingen, Germany.

Leichlinger Sandberge is a group of four hills with Wenzelnberg as the highest elevation in the area. The landform was shaped by geological processes and later altered by sand extraction.

Sand extraction at this location was first documented in 1367 and led to extensive industrial mining operations over centuries. These activities significantly transformed the landscape and continue to shape how the area looks today.

The place takes its name from the sand hills that shape the landscape and have been part of local life for generations. The remaining Heidberg section received protection status to preserve what remains for future visitors and residents.

The area is reachable on foot from Leichlingen town center and offers walking routes through the surrounding landscape. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and includes some steep sections.

The exposed sand layers display different colored deposits in red, white, and yellow that came from ancient ocean deposits of the Triassic period. These geological layers tell the story of the region millions of years ago.
