Schloss Stetten, Medieval château in Künzelsau, Germany.
Schloss Stetten is a castle in Künzelsau that combines medieval fortification elements with later additions from different periods. The complex consists of an older core with two round towers and a timber-framed gatehouse, supplemented by a Baroque palace wing built in the 18th century.
The castle was founded around 1200 during the Staufer period as a fortified structure with stone walls. Over the centuries it was expanded, with the addition of the Baroque palace wing in 1716 marking its most significant modification.
The castle's name derives from the von Stetten family, who have shaped the place for centuries through continuous habitation. The architecture tells this story through its mix of medieval walls and Baroque additions, visible to anyone walking through the complex.
The castle now houses a senior living facility and is therefore not fully open to visitors, so it is mainly viewed from the outside. The outer complex and its architecture remain visible from public areas and provide a good impression of the historical structure.
The von Stetten family has inhabited and managed the castle without interruption since its founding over 800 years ago. This makes it one of the few castles in Germany continuously held by the same family for such an extended period.
