Ruine Muschenwang, Medieval castle ruin in Schelklingen, Germany
Ruine Muschenwang is a castle ruin near Schelklingen featuring a residential tower and an outer fortified complex on a rocky ridge. The stone remains lie around 770 meters above sea level and still show wall sections and an original defensive moat that once separated the inner fortress from the outer area.
The castle was first documented in 1271 and served as an outpost for the lords of Hohenschelklingen. In 1363 it was sold to Kloster Urspring, which marked the end of its role as a military stronghold.
The Lords of Muschenwang displayed their status through their coat of arms, which incorporated the Berg family's diagonal stripe pattern in a twin arrangement.
The ruins sit on open grounds and are accessible by hiking trails leading from Schelklingen. Visitors should expect uneven paths and a somewhat steep climb, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
A farmhouse from the 1500s stands nearby, built from stones taken from the abandoned ruins and surrounded by an unusual circular defensive wall. This structure shows how local people repurposed materials from the castle long after it was left empty.
