Description
Burg Schauenburg is a castle ruin in Dossenheim situated on a slope of Ölberg at around 275 meters elevation. The remaining walls show parts of a square keep and other stone structures that reveal the basic layout of the medieval fortress.
History
The fortress was founded around 1130 and initially served the Diocese of Mainz. It was destroyed in 1460 during military conflicts and was never rebuilt afterward.
Culture
The name comes from Old High German and refers to the structure's original role as a lookout point. From this location, people could watch over the Rhine valley and its traffic routes.
Practical
The ruins are accessible from the western side, where an information board explains the site. The climb up is steep, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
