Schanzenköpfle

Schanzenköpfle is a castle ruin on a hill at roughly 400 meters elevation, displaying remains of gate structures and sections of ring walls. The remnants indicate a former fortified site that made strategic use of the terrain.

The original Hirschburg castle was built in the early 12th century by the Hirschberg family on the hilltop. This early construction laid the foundation for the fortification's development in the region.

The site takes its name from an old fortification and draws visitors who value the views across the Rhine plain. It serves as a vantage point where one can observe the surrounding landscape.

The site is accessible via several hiking trails that run through Naturpark Neckartal-Odenwald and offer different routes. Red benches at the summit allow visitors to enjoy the views and take breaks.

The hilltop was protected by a ring wall and a moat system that extended along three sides of the elevation. This defensive arrangement shows how carefully the site was designed against attackers.
