Grube Marie in der Kohlbach, Underground lead and silver mine in Kohlbachtal, Germany

Grube Marie in der Kohlbach is a historic lead and silver mine in Weinheim with multiple tunnels extending around 24 meters below the main entrance. The passages form a network of exploration and extraction routes through the underground complex.

Mining activities at this site began in 1012 when King Henry II took control of the Kohlbachtal valley and its ore deposits. Operations continued through the following centuries, creating the tunnel network that survives today.

The mine displays medieval mining techniques that visitors can observe while walking through the passages. The wooden ladders and simple tools tell the story of how miners worked in these tunnels.

The site maintains a constant temperature of about 11 degrees Celsius year-round, so visitors should bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes. Guided tours are the best way to explore the underground passages safely and learn about the site.

A wooden climbing board from 1475 was discovered in a water drainage passage and is the only known example of its kind from medieval Germany. This find offers a rare glimpse into the everyday tools and techniques miners used over 500 years ago.
