Grube Marie in der Kohlbach

The Marie Mine consists of multiple tunnels extending 24 meters below the main entrance level, including exploration and extraction passages throughout the complex.

The first mining activities at Marie Mine date back to 1012 when King Henry II retained control of the Kohlbachtal valley with its operating ore mines.

Medieval miners at Marie Mine employed wooden climbing boards for vertical movement, with one specimen from 1475 remaining as evidence of their engineering methods.

The mine maintains a constant temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, requiring visitors to wear appropriate footwear and warm clothing during guided tours.

A wooden climbing board discovered in the mine's water drainage system represents the only artifact of its kind found in Germany from the medieval mining period.
