Spitteleck, Residential complex in Mitte, Germany.
Spitteleck is a residential complex with distinctive curved concrete balconies arranged in vertical rows along Leipziger Street at Spittelmarkt. The building contains 295 apartments, two retail spaces, a restaurant, and a daycare facility serving residents and visitors.
Construction of the complex took place between 1980 and 1985 under architect Eckart Schmidt's direction during the German Democratic Republic era. Following German reunification in 1991, an illuminated Coca-Cola sign was installed on the roof as a symbol of the shift to a market economy.
The facade displays decorative reliefs showing animals, flowers, and children that reflect East German design philosophy. These ornaments give the concrete building a more human touch than similar residential complexes from the same period.
The building is centrally located on an active street and easy to access, with retail spaces and dining options on the ground level. The structure is publicly visible and forms an important part of the street view in this area.
The Coca-Cola sign on the roof became an icon of reunification change in Berlin, marking how commercial symbols reflected the new political direction. It demonstrates the dramatic reshaping of public space after 1991 in a way that visitors still recognize today.
