Siegessäule, War memorial in Siegburg Market Square, Germany
The Siegessäule is a war memorial in Siegburg's market square that honors soldiers who died in the unification conflicts. At its center stands a winged Victoria statue on a sphere, holding a laurel wreath.
The memorial was built to honor soldiers from Siegburg and the Sieg district who died in 1866 and during 1870-1871 in the wars for German unification. The original gas-powered candelabras were removed by British occupation forces after 1919.
The memorial displays inscriptions in capital letters, including 'God was with us, honor to him' and soldiers' names with Iron Cross symbols. These dedications reflect how the city honored and remembered its fallen residents.
The memorial stands in the pedestrian zone on the market square and is easily accessible. During carnival celebrations, the area is protected and glass bottles are not permitted to safeguard the historical structure.
The palm branch that the Victoria statue originally held in her hand disappeared in the 1990s and is no longer visible today. This reminds us how monuments change over time due to various influences.
