Stadtbad Kleine Flurstraße, Former public bathhouse in Barmen district, Wuppertal, Germany.
Stadtbad Kleine Flurstraße is a brick building with three stories featuring prominent corner towers and broad rounded arches supported by natural stone columns. It now houses a brewery restaurant with one of the city's longest bar counters.
The bathhouse was built between 1881 and 1882 and was one of Germany's first facilities with an indoor swimming pool. After more than 100 years of operation it closed in 1993, and four years later reopened as a restaurant establishment.
The building shows how city spaces change their purpose over time: from a public hygiene facility to a gathering place for food and drink. The architecture itself tells the story of these two different periods.
The building is easy to access and the brewery interior is open-plan, so you can explore the architecture well. Service can take longer during peak times, so visiting outside main meal hours works better.
The dining area now occupies the space where the men's pool once was, and many of the original structural elements remain visible. Visitors can see the original architectural features while eating and drinking.
