Bittelschießer Täle is a natural canyon with limestone walls and several caves within the Lauchert River valley. The formation stretches for several hundred meters and creates a narrow, imposing gorge through which the river flows.
The gorge was an important industrial and economic center from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, with several mills and workshops operating there. These facilities used the river's water power for their production.
The name comes from the medieval Bittelschieß Castle, whose ruins still stand above the canyon and show how important this structure was to the region. Visitors can see today how much this fortress shaped the landscape around it.
The valley is best explored on marked hiking trails that run along the river and through the gorge. The paths may vary in accessibility depending on the season, so wearing sturdy shoes and being careful in wet weather is recommended.
One of the caves in the gorge extends several meters deep into the limestone formation and displays fascinating geological structures. These underground cavities are often overlooked despite being among the most unusual features of the valley.
