Park und Bauernhausmuseum Speckenbüttel, Rural life museum and park in Bremerhaven, Germany
Park and Farm House Museum Speckenbüttel is an open-air museum with eleven historical buildings from the 17th century, including farmhouses, barns, and stables set in a green park landscape. The site spreads across several hectares with pathways between the houses, a rose garden, and water features.
The museum was established to preserve farmhouses and agricultural buildings from the region before they were lost and to gather them in one park setting. The 17th century saw different levels of prosperity across the various landscape types of the North Elbe-Weser region.
The buildings reveal how farmers in the region lived day to day, with tools, furniture, and household items from earlier centuries. Visitors can observe the contrasting living conditions between wealthier marsh farmers and poorer geest farmers.
The museum park is best visited between April and September, when all buildings are open and the gardens look their best. Comfortable shoes are important because you walk between the houses on paths that are sometimes unpaved.
A working windmill stands at the entrance and shows how important wind power was for farmers in the marsh areas. The site also has a swimming pool and boat rental, which set it apart from a typical museum visit.
