Geschwister-Scholl-Haus, Cultural heritage monument in Leipzig, Germany
The Geschwister-Scholl-Haus is a cultural monument in Leipzig with a simple baroque facade marked by curved blind arcades and a mansard roof with varied dormers. Inside, the Institute of Art Education at Leipzig University operates, offering teaching and creative development within historic rooms.
The building was constructed between 1908 and 1910 and originally served as Germany's first school of commerce. In 1948 it was renamed to honor Sophie and Hans Scholl, who fought against the Nazis and were executed for their resistance.
The building is dedicated to resistance against Nazi rule and bears the names of the Scholl siblings, whose courage continues to inspire many. Visitors find here a place that recalls their story and raises questions about moral courage.
The building sits centrally on Ritterstrasse with good access to public transportation and several educational facilities nearby. Since it remains an active university building, opening hours are limited and advance notice is recommended for visits.
Sculptor Georg Wrba from Dresden created relief panels with trade motifs that decorate the building's exterior and reflect its original purpose as a school of commerce. These artistic details are often overlooked, yet they tell the story of what the house was originally designed for.
