Icon museum of Frankfurt, Religious art museum in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Icon Museum of Frankfurt is an art museum housed in a former monastery refectory that collects religious objects from Russia, Greece, Romania, Egypt, Syria, and Ethiopia. The collection comprises around 130 religious works displayed without protective glass to allow clear viewing of their craftsmanship.
The museum was founded in 1990 based on a major collection of sacred icons donated by Dr. Jörgen Schmidt-Voigt. This gift established it as a significant center for religious art in German-speaking Europe.
The collection presents religious artworks rooted in Orthodox tradition, reflecting diverse spiritual expressions from Eastern Christianity. Visitors can observe the variety of liturgical forms and artistic styles that developed across different cultures.
Plan time for a leisurely visit, as the close display arrangement of works invites slow observation and detailed study. Good lighting and the absence of protective glass barriers make close examination of each piece comfortable.
The Ethiopia section displays Germany's only exhibition of Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox church artifacts, including handwritten manuscripts, crosses, and religious figures. This collection offers rare insight into a less-known Christian art tradition outside Europe.
