Heiliggeistkirche, Gothic church in Heidelberg Market Square, Germany
The Church of the Holy Spirit features a stone exterior with high windows, a prominent spire, and stands as the largest religious building in Heidelberg.
Construction of the church began in 1398 under King Rupert's commission, with the choir completed in 1411 and the nave finished in 1441.
The church building housed the Bibliotheca Palatina, containing manuscripts and books from Heidelberg University and regional monasteries until the Thirty Years War.
The church remains open for visitors throughout the year and receives between one and three million guests annually who can explore its Gothic architecture.
For three centuries, a wall separated the nave from the choir, allowing Catholics and Protestants to conduct services simultaneously in different sections.
