Großer und Kleiner Engel, Timber-framed house at Römerberg, Frankfurt, Germany
The Great and Little Angel is a six-story timber-framed building at Römerberg, distinguished by ornately decorated upper floors with fine carvings and bay windows above a stone ground floor. The structure combines elements from two former parcels and occupies a prominent position in the east row of the historic center.
The house was built in 1562 and combined two previously separate parcels into one structure. This merger created one of the most elaborately decorated private buildings of late Gothic style in Frankfurt.
Biblical inscriptions on the facade expressed both religious beliefs and business relationships, showing how faith and commerce were intertwined in the lives of Frankfurt merchants.
The building is located at Römerberg 28 and forms the northernmost structure of the east row in the center. The best way to see all the facade details is to view it from different points around the square and change your perspective.
The basement extends beneath and beyond the building's footprint, originally accessible through a separate exterior entrance now hidden. This hidden chamber reveals how medieval business operations extended underground.
