Steinernes Haus

The Steinernes Haus stands on Römerberg in Frankfurt's old town, featuring medieval architecture with stone walls and a characteristic Madonna statue in the southwestern corner. The building houses exhibition spaces today and serves as a venue for cultural events.

The building was constructed in 1464 by Johann von Melem and survived for centuries before suffering heavy damage during World War II in 1944. It underwent extensive reconstruction between 1959 and 1962.

The Frankfurt Art Association uses the building today as a gallery for contemporary art and hosts regular cultural events throughout the year. The rooms serve as an active meeting point and exhibition space for the local art community.

The building is accessible Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 to 19:00, Wednesday until 21:00, and weekends from 10:00 to 19:00. Visitors should plan their visit around the exhibition calendar, as the space is regularly used for art shows and cultural events.

Archaeological excavations revealed that beneath the building lie the remains of a Roman farmstead from ancient times. This layer under the medieval foundation shows that the Römerberg area had been occupied since the Roman period.
