Freiburger Rieselfeld, Protected natural area in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
The Freiburger Rieselfeld is a nature reserve with meadows, pastures, and fields connected by a network of water channels. The landscape is shaped by open waterways that run throughout the entire area.
The area was established in 1891 as an innovative wastewater purification system that filtered sewage through natural methods. This early process was used before cleaned water flowed into the Dreisam river.
The name refers to the Rieselfelder technique, a historical irrigation system still visible today. Visitors can observe how water flows through the meadows and creates different habitats.
A walking trail runs through the reserve and connects various observation points and information boards. The path is well marked so visitors can easily explore the area.
Since 2018, water buffaloes graze in specific sections of the reserve and help maintain biodiversity through their grazing habits. Their presence is part of a modern conservation approach.
