Baumgartenbrücke, Road bridge in Schwielowsee and Werder, Germany
The Baumgartenbrücke is a road bridge that crosses the Potsdam Havel and links Geltow and Petzow. The current concrete structure, built in 1989, carries Federal Road 1 in both directions and accommodates cyclists on European Cycle Route 1.
The first wooden structure at this location was built in 1676 under Friedrich Wilhelm, replacing earlier ford and ferry crossings. During the 18th century, the eastern side housed a customs post and guard station to prevent soldiers from deserting.
The bridge displays animal sculptures by artist Stephan Walter, including otters restored to their original position in 1994. These artworks shape how the structure looks and reflect the connection between the crossing and the river landscape.
The bridge provides direct access for pedestrians and cyclists traveling on the European route network. Traffic flows over a modern concrete structure that is passable year-round and offers good sightlines.
The animal sculptures by Stephan Walter were deliberately placed to remind visitors of the place's natural history. The restored otters in particular tell of an art commission that honors the river ecosystem.
