Schloss Zedtlitz

Schloss Zedtlitz is a Baroque-style castle in Borna that displays the architectural characteristics of its period. The three-story structure features a symmetrical facade with seven window bays across its width, a prominent entrance portal, and a residential wing extending to the left.

The earliest documented reference to a water castle at this site dates to 1190, when it was owned by Heinrich and Otto von Zedtlitz. The location remained under the family's control for centuries until different eras brought changes to its ownership and use.

The composer Albert Lortzing visited this location in 1840 and drew inspiration for his opera 'Der Wildschütz' during his time here. The residence became known among creative circles as a place where artistic ideas could flourish and take root.

The castle is located in Zedtlitz near Borna and can be reached on foot or by car. Visitors should note that while the exterior can be viewed from the grounds, access to interior areas may be limited, so checking ahead about visiting options is advisable.

Following land reforms in 1945, the castle underwent a complete change of purpose and served as a kindergarten for the local community for many years. This transformation demonstrates how noble estates adapted to new social functions after wartime changes.
