Emmauskirche, Medieval church in Borna, Germany
Emmauskirche is a rectangular stone building in Romanesque style in eastern Saxony, standing watch over the town with its tower silhouette. The interior is shaped by a Renaissance ceiling that rests on a single central column.
The building was first documented in 1297 and kept its Romanesque architecture over the centuries. An organ was added in the mid-19th century and bells were later installed.
The name Emmauskirche references the biblical story of Emmaus and Christ's recognition. Visitors can see today how the interior furnishings tell a story of the past and shape the space.
Access is usually possible, but it is worth checking availability before visiting. The location is central in town and easy to reach.
In 2007 the entire building, weighing about 665 tons, was transported 12 kilometers to rescue it from mining. This remarkable relocation made the church a technical monument of its era.
