Klosterkirche St. Maria

The Klosterkirche St. Maria is a granite basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan and polygonal apses, characterized throughout by pointed arches. The building features multiple aisles with distinctive Gothic elements that define its architectural character.

Construction began in the 12th century under Archbishop Wichmann of Magdeburg, with the building consecrated in 1226 after initial delays. The church was erected during a period when the region grew stronger under church leadership and grand stone structures became common.

The interior contains religious artworks and furnishings that reveal how worship spaces changed and developed over time. Visitors can see medieval altar pieces, a baroque pulpit, and Gothic floor inscriptions that show how people decorated their churches in different periods.

During restoration work in 2017, workers discovered a 1722 wall painting beneath the organ gallery showing King David playing his harp. This hidden artwork remained concealed for centuries until modern conservation efforts brought it back to light.
