Zinna Abbey

Zinna Abbey, Cistercian monastery in Jüterbog, Germany

Zinna Abbey is a monastery complex featuring a Gothic church, former abbot buildings, and medieval brick structures spread across the grounds in Jüterbog. The site includes a historic weaving house and what was once a house for the sick, both now open to visitors.

The monastery was founded in 1170 and grew into an important center of influence in the region until the Reformation. Its closure came in the 16th century when religious and political changes transformed the site's purpose.

The name Zinna comes from the nearby stream and has shaped the place's identity since its founding. Visitors can sense today in the restored rooms how monastic life was organized and lived here for centuries.

The site can be visited and guided tours are offered through the restored church and former buildings. It is best to allow time for a leisurely walk across the grounds to explore the architecture and structures at your own pace.

A distinctive feature is the production of a traditional herbal liqueur in one of the former buildings, made using medieval recipes. This craft tradition links the site's history directly to what visitors can experience during their visit.
