Historisch-Technisches Museum – Versuchsstelle Kummersdorf, Military technology museum in Kummersdorf, Germany.
The Historisch-Technische Museum is an open-air museum on a former military site near Am Mellensee that spans a vast area in Brandenburg. The grounds contain buildings, workshops, and testing facilities where weapons, vehicles, and aircraft components were once developed and tested.
The facility was founded in 1875 as an artillery testing field and quickly grew into a major research center where the military tested new technologies. Operations ceased in 1945 when the Second World War ended.
The site demonstrates how scientists and engineers worked on military projects across decades and shaped industrial development in the region. Visitors today see the buildings and workshops where people carried out their daily work.
The grounds are large and require comfortable shoes to explore the various stations and buildings. Guided tours are required and must be booked in advance, as the site still contains remnants from wartime that pose safety risks.
The site preserves original rocket testing stands and large assembly halls, some of which are remarkably preserved. One of the heaviest tank designs of that era was also constructed and tested here.
