Kälberwerder

Kälberwerder, River island and park in Wannsee, Germany.

Kälberwerder is a small, uninhabited island in the Havel River that feels like a natural garden. The space offers room for nature watching and water views, surrounded by quiet banks.

A private owner named Albert Thiemt bought the island in 1909 and later made it available to the local rowing club. The club officially took ownership in 1926 and continues to use it as club grounds today.

Two oak trees with bronze plaques honor Olympic gold medalists from 1936 and 2004. These trees show how much sport and achievement matter to people in this area.

The island lies in view of other water attractions and is reachable from a boat dock. Visitors should expect changing conditions throughout the year as the river and vegetation shift with the seasons.

The island remains completely undeveloped and uninhabited, preserving a wild space within the large city. This makes it a rare example of a natural river area that has stayed untouched in urban Berlin.
