Templerkommende Braunschweig, Religious monastery in Brunswick, Germany.
Templerkommende Braunschweig is a monastery complex with multiple buildings situated along a side channel of the Oker River. The site is bordered to the south by the Deutschordenshof complex and located on Bohlweg street in the Hagen district.
Heinrich the Lion founded this monastery in 1173 following his journey to the Holy Land, where he encountered both the Templar and Johannite orders. The site changed hands and religious purposes multiple times throughout the medieval and early modern periods.
The chapel served as a focal point where residents gathered for worship and prayers across centuries. Multiple altars within the space reflected the spiritual importance this monastery held for the local community.
The monastery is located in the city center and is easily reached on foot from the Hagen district. Visitors should note that some buildings may have restricted access and the site is surrounded by modern urban structures.
The chapel was dedicated to Saint Matthew and housed an altarpiece depicting the Annunciation of Mary. This artwork illustrates the artistic importance these prayer spaces held within the medieval city.
