Bornholms Middelaldercenter, Medieval theme park and open-air museum in Østerlars, Denmark.
Bornholms Middelaldercenter is an open-air museum in Østerlars covering roughly 14 hectares that shows rural life between 1350 and 1450. The site includes a fortress with ramparts, towers, a chapel, farmhouses, a working forge, and a watermill, all built based on historical models.
The museum was founded in 1996 and focuses on showing daily life and military practices in medieval Denmark. It demonstrates how rural society was organized during that period and what role agricultural and defensive structures played.
Costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts such as blacksmithing and grain milling in reconstructed medieval settings. You can watch how people of that era performed daily tasks and what tools they used in their work.
The museum is located in the countryside and is walkable, though easily accessible by car. Plan for at least two to three hours to see all the buildings and craft demonstrations throughout the site.
The site is built on a hilltop, and from the fortress you have a wide view over the Danish landscape and surroundings. This elevated position was a key strategic advantage in medieval times for defense against attackers.
