Hellerup, suburb of Copenhagen in Gentofte Kommune
Hellerup is a city district in Gentofte Municipality just north of Copenhagen, stretching from the coastal road Strandvejen down to the sea. The area features large, well-maintained houses set behind trees and fences, a harbor area with moored boats, and a shallow beach with a playground.
The area was named after the manor Hellerupgård and remained mostly farmland until the 19th century. The construction of a harbor and brewery in the late 1800s started the transformation from open countryside into a prosperous suburb.
The name Hellerup comes from an old manor house called Hellerupgård that shaped the area's identity. Today the neighborhood reveals itself through daily life along Strandvejen, where boutique shops and cafes draw people to walk and gather.
The area is easily walkable and well connected to Copenhagen by public transport, with a train ride of around 10 minutes. The wide, quiet streets are easy to navigate, and there is plenty of space for walking or sitting in parks and along the coast.
Several embassies from countries including Israel, Ghana, China and South Korea have established residences here, giving the residential area a discreet international character. These diplomatic buildings are often tucked behind trees and fences, adding to the area's exclusive atmosphere.
