Gentofte Lake, Natural lake in Gentofte, Denmark
Gentofte Lake is a freshwater body covering roughly 37 hectares with walking paths around its edge and parkland beside it. The space is open to visitors throughout the year for outdoor activities and walking.
Until 1959, this lake supplied drinking water to Copenhagen's residents as part of the city's water system. Its role changed as modern water supply systems were developed and expanded.
The yellow buildings of the former Mitchell hosiery factory, built in 1795 near the shore, remain visible reminders of the area's industrial past. They show how manufacturing shaped daily life and work in this region.
The lake is easily reached by train or bus, with multiple stations nearby connecting to central Copenhagen and surrounding areas. Entry is free and the site is open year-round for visitors to enjoy at their own pace.
The northwest section of this lake connects with Brobæk Mose, a bogland area, creating a mixed habitat that hosts diverse wildlife and plant species. This connection makes the surroundings a noteworthy spot for observing local nature.
