Bellevue Teatret, Modernist theatre in Klampenborg, Denmark.
Bellevue Teatret is a modernist theater in Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen, with seating for around 700 people and a retractable roof. Inside, the walls and balconies are finished in canvas and bamboo, and mosaic decorations run throughout the space.
Arne Jacobsen designed the theater in 1936 as part of a broader coastal development around Bellevue. It was built at the same time as the nearby beach facilities and residential blocks, forming a single planned project along the shore.
Bellevue Teatret is known for rock musicals and modern music shows, which draw a broad and mixed crowd. In summer, ballet performances give the venue a different feel, attracting a more traditional theater-going audience.
The theater sits right on the coast in Klampenborg and is easy to reach from central Copenhagen. If you want to eat before or after a show, it helps to book a table at the Øvre Bar or terrace a few days in advance.
The front curtain carries a painted beach girl by artist Åge Sikker Hansen, a direct nod to the sea just outside. When the curtain rises, the image disappears and the stage takes over, creating a small visual surprise at the start of every show.
