Christiansholms Batteri, ancient monument in Gentofte Municipality (190110)
Christiansholms Batteri is a small fortification in Gentofte Municipality with thick stone walls and narrow openings for cannons. The structure was built in a simple functional style focused on practicality and defense rather than elaborate design.
The fortification was built between 1887 and 1892 as part of a defense system north of the city. It was armed with 15 centimeter cannons capable of firing up to five kilometers and was taken out of active use in 1920.
The name refers to the area's historical role as a defensive post guarding the coast. Today visitors can experience the quiet surroundings and reflect on how soldiers once stationed here watched over the water and protected the city.
The site is easily reached by car or bicycle with parking usually available nearby. As a protected monument, visitors should be careful not to climb on the walls or remove any parts of the structure.
The cannons were funded by donations from women's groups and earned the nickname 'women's guns' as a tribute to their collectors. The upper part of the fort called the 'strube' remains today and was partly incorporated into modern houses designed by architect Mogens Lassen.
