Institut Jeanne d'Arc, Roman Catholic school in Copenhagen, Denmark
Institut Jeanne d'Arc was a girls' school in Frederiksberg, designed by architect Christian Mandrup-Poulsen as a red-brick building with four stories and a mansard roof, containing 29 classrooms across three wings. The institution offered instruction in the French language and was connected to the Catholic tradition.
The school was founded in 1924 and served the community for many years. On March 21, 1945, the building was mistakenly bombed by Allied planes aiming for the Gestapo headquarters nearby, resulting in many deaths among children and adults inside.
Institut Jeanne d'Arc was a Catholic school in a predominantly Lutheran country and maintained French traditions in its education. The institution served as a place where values and academic learning came together, shaping the local community.
The original school site on Frederiksberg Allé no longer exists; modern apartment buildings now stand in its place. A monument commemorates the victims and offers a space for reflection for those wishing to learn about this history.
The 2021 film 'The Shadow in My Eye' tells the story of the bombing day and was later made available on Netflix. Artist Max Andersen created a memorial to preserve the event and the memory of those who died.
