Munkegaard School, Public school in Dyssegård, Denmark
Munkegaard School is a public school east of Copenhagen consisting of a series of single-story buildings connected by glass-walled corridors. The complex includes 24 classrooms, each with direct access to its own courtyard.
The school opened in 1957 and set new standards for school architecture in Denmark. The single-story design was innovative at the time and introduced a different approach to how schools were built.
The school displays artworks in its courtyards and remains a recognized example of 1950s Danish modernist design. Visitors can explore how these outdoor spaces were meant to shape the school experience through thoughtful architectural choices.
Each classroom has south-facing clerestory windows that provide natural light throughout the day. The arrangement of rooms around separate courtyards makes it easy to find your way around the campus.
Architect Arne Jacobsen designed not only the building but also all the furniture and lighting, including the famous Munkegaard chair. This chair later became known internationally and continues to be produced today.
