Tigzirt, commune and town in Tizi Ouzou Province, Algeria
Tigzirt is a small town on Algeria's coast with Roman ruins showing remains of an ancient port city. The site includes old streets, a forum, a temple, and administrative buildings that illustrate Roman city layout, while informative signs help visitors understand the functions of different structures.
Tigzirt began as a Phoenician settlement and later became the important Roman port Iomnium used for trade and troop transport. A basilica from the 5th or 6th century shows later Christian settlement and remains visible in the town today.
The name Tigzirt comes from the Kabyle language and means "island," reflecting the historical importance of water to the settlement. Residents speak Kabyle alongside Arabic and maintain traditional ways of life visible in daily routines and local markets.
Wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and walking is necessary to explore the site fully. Hiring a local guide provides detailed stories, and early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and fewer crowds.
