Walls of Tallinn, Medieval fortification in Tallinn, Estonia
The walls stretch over 2 kilometers with a height reaching 16 meters, featuring 46 towers and multiple gates throughout the perimeter.
Queen Margaret Sambiria ordered the construction of the first defensive wall in 1265, which measured 5 meters tall and 1.5 meters thick.
The fortification system required citizens to perform guard duty while wearing armor, demonstrating their commitment to protecting the medieval city.
Visitors can walk sections of the walls between Nunne, Sauna, and Kuldjala towers to view the red-roofed Old Town from above.
The defensive complex retains 26 towers and 1.9 kilometers of its original wall structure, making it among the largest medieval fortifications in northern Europe.
