Kopli, Industrial peninsula district in Tallinn, Estonia
Kopli is an industrial district on a northern peninsula of Tallinn, extending between Tallinn Bay, Kopli Bay, and Paljassaare Bay. The area features maritime facilities and wooden houses that define its waterfront character.
The 1912 opening of the Russian-Baltic Shipyard transformed Kopli from uninhabited forest into a residential district with worker housing and essential services. This industrial development became the foundation for the area's growth and character.
The district once held a Lutheran Baltic German cemetery from 1774 until Soviet authorities transformed it into a public park in the 1950s. This shift reveals how the area's purpose changed dramatically across different historical periods.
The district is accessible by trams 2 and 6, as well as buses 32, 72, and 73 that connect it to central Tallinn. Public transport provides convenient links to other parts of the city.
The Estonian Maritime Academy now operates from the former Russian-Baltic Shipyard building, keeping the district's maritime industrial legacy alive. This use connects the area's past shipbuilding role with its present-day maritime education mission.
