Lower Town, Medieval subdistrict in Vanalinn, Estonia
Lower Town extends through narrow cobblestone streets lined with traditional merchant houses, churches, and fortified buildings from medieval times. Most structures date from the 14th to 16th centuries and stand closely together in tight blocks.
The district developed in the 14th century as a trading hub of the Hanseatic League, linking Western Europe with the North. The stone walls and towers were constructed during this period to defend the settlement from attacks.
The Great Guild Hall shows how medieval merchants lived and traded through its rooms and displays. Visitors can walk through spaces that reveal daily routines and business practices of the past.
The area is easily explored on foot since all main sites are close together. Viru Gate at the edge provides a good entry point from which you can reach the narrow streets.
The district preserves roughly 66 towers and a two-kilometer stone wall from which visitors can walk sections of the medieval fortifications. These passages offer rare views across the old settlement.
