Toompark, Protected park in Old Town, Estonia
Toompark is a protected park built on former fortification grounds around Snelli pond, featuring varied terrain with different tree species arranged in a landscape garden design. The space connects different levels of the city and includes pathways that lead through various sections of vegetation.
The park was created in the 1920s from former defensive earthworks and hay fields, while the Snelli pond was preserved from the 1760s city moat. This transformation of fortification land into public green space occurred as part of the city's renewal after independence.
The Patkuli staircase connects the upper part of Toompea with the lower city below, serving as a central passage through the green spaces. Locals and visitors use this route daily as a practical shortcut between the two city levels.
The main entrance at Nunne Street 17 is open throughout the year and provides direct access to the pond area and walking paths. The park is conveniently located near Old Town and easy to reach on foot.
A Swedish gardener named Johan Snell once lived near the pond, and his historical connection led to the water feature's name. The memory of this person remains embedded in the place through its naming.
