Sohag Governorate, Administrative region in Upper Egypt
Sohag Governorate is an administrative region in the Nile Valley between Assiut and Qena. It covers river plains, cultivated fields, and the adjacent desert that runs parallel to the watercourse.
The area is home to Abydos, a city that played a central role during the earliest pharaonic dynasties. Later periods brought Greek and Roman influence, visible in tombs and temples across the region.
The population of over 5.8 million residents maintains traditional agricultural practices along the Nile Valley while adapting to modern developments.
Towns across the governorate are mostly accessible by roads that follow the river, while desert areas remain more remote. Local facilities include medical stations and services supported by mobile units.
At Al-Dayabat, excavations uncovered noble tombs from the Ptolemaic era containing sarcophagi and mummified animals. The site reveals burial practices from a later Egyptian period blended with Hellenistic elements.
