Panopolis, Archaeological site in Akhmim, Egypt
The ruins of Panopolis extend along the east bank of the Nile River, 450 kilometers south of Cairo, featuring temples and ancient structures.
During the Predynastic period around 4000 BCE, Panopolis emerged as a settlement and developed into the capital of the ninth nome of Upper Egypt.
The Temple of Min stood as the central religious complex where inhabitants performed ceremonies dedicated to the god of fertility and sexuality.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site from Cairo by following the eastern route along the Nile River through Upper Egypt to Akhmim.
The settlement maintained continuous human occupation from prehistoric times through the Pharaonic and Greco-Roman periods until the present-day city of Akhmim.
