S 9, Royal tomb complex near Abydos, Egypt

S 9 is a royal tomb near Abydos with chambers lined by limestone blocks and a burial space containing a massive sarcophagus made from three quartzite stone blocks. The monument follows the construction methods typical of royal burials from its period.

This monument was built during the 13th Dynasty in the late Middle Kingdom. It suffered extensive looting in later periods, particularly during the Second Intermediate Period and under Roman rule.

This tomb sits within a royal necropolis positioned northeast of the causeway leading to Senusret III's funerary temple. Visitors can observe how the structure fits into the larger ceremonial landscape and its role within the wider burial ground.

Access to this tomb is through the Abydos archaeological site, where visitor information can help orient you to the various burial monuments in the area. Plan your visit during cooler months, as summer heat can make exploring the open structures uncomfortable.

This burial monument features an innovative quartzite portcullis system designed to block grave robbers from reaching the main burial chamber. The construction reveals how seriously builders took the threat of looting in their time.
