S 9, Royal tomb complex near Abydos, Egypt

The S9 tomb features limestone blocks lining its substructures and contains a massive sarcophagus constructed from three blocks of quartzite sandstone.

Dating to the mid-13th Dynasty during the late Middle Kingdom, tomb S9 underwent extensive looting during the Second Intermediate Period and Roman times.

The tomb forms part of a royal necropolis located northeast of the causeway leading to the funerary complex of Senusret III.

Excavations revealed fragments of burned wood, pieces of inscribed gilded plaster from a mummy mask, and additional burial artifacts within the chamber.

The tomb includes an innovative quartzite portcullis system designed to prevent grave robbers from accessing the main burial chamber.
